Somewhere new for two

My favourite spots across North Wales for a proposal, a sunset or a walk for two. Check the tide and the weather before you go, and if the weather turns, play it by ear or wait till it stops.

The lighthouse on Ynys Llanddwyn, Anglesey

Where to go

Anglesey

Ynys Llanddwyn, Newborough

proposalslate lighta walk for two
Why
A narrow finger of land pointing out to sea, home to the remains of St Dwynwen's Church, named after the Welsh patron saint of lovers.
Best time
Around low tide. The island can be cut off at high tide, so check tide times before you set off.
Parking
Llanddwyn Beach car park (LL61 6SG covers a wide area; follow the brown "Ynys Llanddwyn" signs from Newborough). Pay every day, short free drop-off, all day £15. No overnight parking.
Walk
Saint, Sand and Sea Trail, 4.4 miles / 7 km, moderate, from the beach car park.
Good to know
Exposed in bad weather; no lifeguards; seasonal dog restrictions (see the sign in the car park).
Llŷn Peninsula

Porthdinllaen

proposalsa walk for twosea views
Why
An old fishing village on a thin ribbon of land stretching into the Irish Sea, with views across the bay towards Pistyll and Trefor.
Best time
The countryside is open dawn to dusk. The marine trail follows the beach, so check Nefyn tide times first.
Parking
National Trust car park, Morfa Nefyn, LL53 6DA. Open all day; pay and display (coins); free for NT members. Grass car park, three Blue Badge spaces.
Walk
Porthdinllaen marine trail, 2.5 miles / 4 km, moderate (steep in places, steps).
Good to know
The path between Porthdinllaen and the lifeboat hut is currently closed; follow the alternative route around the headland. Seasonal dog restrictions 1 April–30 September.
Near Bangor

Aber Falls, Coedydd Aber

a walk for twoa proposal at the falls
Why
A spectacular waterfall that's drawn visitors since Victorian times, at the end of an easy valley path.
Best time
Early in the day or midweek; the small car parks fill quickly at weekends and in school holidays.
Parking
Two small car parks by a stone bridge at the start of the trail, £5 (coins or card), free for Blue Badge holders; locked overnight. On busy days use the free car park on the edge of Abergwyngregyn (about a mile's walk). Leave the A55 at junction 13.
Walk
Aber Falls Walk, 2.3 miles / 3.7 km there and back, easy (gradual 100 m climb, compacted stone path, benches).
Conwy

Bodnant Garden, Tal-y-Cafn

proposalsgarden strolls
Why
80 acres of gardens with the Carneddau mountains behind, and the 55-metre Laburnum Arch, believed to be the longest and oldest in Britain.
Best time
The Laburnum Arch flowers towards the end of May and the start of June. In 2026 the garden opened later into the evening for it, and the early evening was quieter.
Parking
Free car park (LL28 5RE), off the A470, signposted from A55 junction 19. Garden admission applies; opening times vary by season.
Good to know
Dogs on short leads every day 1 Oct–31 Mar; Thursday–Sunday 1 Apr–30 Sep.
Conwy

Llyn Crafnant, near Trefriw

a walk for twoa quiet lakeside moment
Why
The view from the head of the lake over the water to the mountains is said to be one of the finest in North Wales.
Parking
Free car park just before the lake, with toilets and Blue Badge spaces; no overnight parking. From Llanrwst take the B5106 to Trefriw, then the narrow road about two miles up the valley.
Walk
Llyn Crafnant Circuit, 3.1 miles / 5 km, easy. Or the Afon Crafnant Amble, 0.4 mile, accessible.
Flintshire

Talacre Beach and Point of Ayr

late lighta beach walk for two
Why
A splendid sandy beach with a small disused lighthouse that leans slightly to one side, next to the Gronant Dunes and Talacre Warren nature reserve.
Best time
When the tide is out; at high tide the sea comes past the beach signposts. In a very high tide, use the shorter route behind the dunes.
Parking
Beside the marsh at the end of Station Road if the barrier is open, or car parks before the road end.
Walk
Talacre Warren circular, 3.1 miles / 5 km (or 1.6 miles behind the dunes, usable any time). Point of Ayr circular, 2.6 miles / 4.2 km, flat and easy.
Clwydian Range

Moel Famau and the Jubilee Tower

sunsets and big viewsa walk for two
Why
The highest summit in the Clwydian Range (554 m), topped by the ruins of the Jubilee Tower (built 1810), with views across North Wales and towards North West England.
Best time
Plan to be back at the car before the gates shut: Coed Moel Famau car park closes at 6pm (Oct–Mar) and 9pm (Apr–Sep). On long summer evenings the sunset can be later than the gate, so time it carefully.
Parking
Coed Moel Famau car park (CH7 5SH covers a wide area; grid ref SJ 171 610), max £6 a day. Or Bwlch Pen Barras car park, £6 all day. No overnight parking.
Walk
Jubilee Tower Circular, 3.6 miles / 5.8 km, 280 m climb, moderate.
Good to know
No mobile signal here, so arrange meeting points in advance.
Dee Valley

Horseshoe Falls, Llantysilio

proposalsa riverside walk
Why
Telford's curved weir on the River Dee, where the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site begins.
Parking
Llantysilio Green car park, LL20 8BT, 8am–9pm, pay and display (cash or card), £6 all day; free for NT members; 2.4 m height limit; toilets. Or walk under two miles along the towpath from Llangollen.
Good to know
Steep grassy slope down from the car park; kissing gates and an uneven riverside path, so not suitable for wheelchairs to the falls.
Wrexham

Erddig

a walk for twogarden proposals
Why
A restored 18th-century walled garden with avenues of pleached limes, set in a 1,200-acre landscape park with the "cup and saucer" cascade and riverside picnic spots.
Best time
The parkland is free and open dawn to dusk; garden admission applies.
Parking
Free all-weather car park, about 200 yards from the entrance (capacity can be reduced after rain). Satnav may not find LL13 0YT, so follow the brown signs from the A525/A483.
Walk
Waymarked estate walks, e.g. the French meadow walk, 3.5 miles.
Checked Nov 2026. Charges and times change, so check before you go.
