Commitment and Symbolic Ceremonies: What They Are and Who They’re For

A commitment ceremony is a celebration of a relationship without the legal paperwork of a marriage. A symbolic wedding is much the same thing by another name. Both put your promises at the centre, without a register in sight.

I'm Leon, an accredited celebrant and photographer based in Llandudno. Every ceremony I write is personal, and commitment ceremonies are no exception.

What Makes It "Symbolic"

In England and Wales, a ceremony becomes a legal marriage only when certain legal requirements are met, which is why most couples complete that part at a register office. A celebrant-led ceremony on its own is not legally binding. That is not a weakness. It means the ceremony can happen anywhere, at any time, and say whatever you want it to. GOV.UK sets out the legal side, and celebrant, registrar or humanist explains who does what.

Who It's For

Couples choose a commitment ceremony for all sorts of reasons. Some are not ready to marry legally, or do not feel the need to. Some have already signed the paperwork quietly and want a ceremony that feels like theirs. Others simply want to stand somewhere beautiful and make promises in their own words.

What Goes Into One

Much the same as any celebrant-led ceremony: your story, your promises and a moment that marks the change. You might add a ring exchange, a handfasting, a reading or a Welsh tradition. Welsh wedding traditions for your ceremony has ideas.

How I Can Help

An elopement with Elope with Leon includes a personalised ceremony written from scratch, plus photographs of the whole day. If you are already married and want to recommit, a Twilight Ceremonies sunset vow renewal is built for exactly that. What does a celebrant actually do shows how the writing works.

Anywhere You Choose

Without legal restrictions on the setting, a symbolic ceremony can happen on an Anglesey beach, beside a lake in Eryri, on the Llŷn coast, in the north-east hills or in your own garden. You can choose anywhere.

Promises count because you mean them, with or without a certificate. Read about the law reform in England and Wales, then plan your experience and tell me what you want to promise.
