I'm based in Llandudno, and one of the best parts of my work is that North Wales gives every love story its own backdrop. Rugged mountains, country escapes and seaside bliss, all within an easy drive of each other. Over the years, I've stood on clifftops, lakeshores and beaches for proposals, elopements and sunset anniversaries.
This isn't a list of the "top ten" places. It's a little tour of the three areas I find myself returning to most, what each one is like, and the practical details worth knowing before you go.
Llandudno and the Great Orme
My home town has more romance packed into it than people expect. The Great Orme rises straight out of the sea at the end of the promenade, with views over to Anglesey and the mountains. It's also home to goats who may photobomb your photos, which I consider a bonus rather than a problem. Down on the seafront, the Victorian promenade and pier make it easy to combine a proposal or an anniversary with an evening out afterwards.
The easiest way around the headland is the Marine Drive Toll Road. Conwy County Borough Council describes it as a 5 mile scenic drive around the base of the Great Orme, open all year. The car toll is £5.80, payable with PayByPhone or cash at the toll booth, and your ticket also covers parking at the summit.
On the other side of town, Llandudno West Shore Beach has some of the best sunsets in North Wales. It's a favourite for Twilight Ceremonies, where the sky does most of the work.
Anglesey's Coast and Lighthouses
Cross the Menai Strait and the landscape opens up. Anglesey is all wide skies, sandy bays and lighthouses. I've officiated and photographed at South Stack lighthouse, and Penmon Lighthouse and Trearddur Bay are on my list of favourite places for sunset anniversaries. It's also where Nabeel and Massuma's proposal shoot took place, in the evening as the sun was setting.
On the south west corner of the island, Ynys Llanddwyn is tied up with St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. If you're visiting, the Newborough car park is run by Natural Resources Wales, with charges between 6am and 11:59pm, and overnight parking isn't allowed. Coastal walks always depend on the tide, so I check the times on Admiralty EasyTide before any visit.
Eryri's Lakes and Mountains
For many couples, Eryri is the dream. The national park authority uses the Welsh names Eryri and Yr Wyddfa for Snowdonia and Snowdon, and if you'd like to say them confidently, Eryri has a handy guide to pronouncing Yr Wyddfa.
Some of my favourite elopements have happened here. Dean and Tori married amongst the rolling hills of Cwm Idwal in summer 2023, and Penny and James chose the lonely tree beside a glass-like lake in Llanberis in autumn 2025. Around Llyn Padarn, Parc Padarn lists three car parks, at Gilfach Ddu, Dolbadarn and Y Glyn, with payment by machine or PayByPhone.
Mountain weather changes quickly, so I always plan with a sheltered option nearby. Cloud is often a gift, too, acting as a natural diffuser for soft light.
Matching the Place to the Chapter
Each experience tends to suit a different kind of place. Proposals often work best somewhere quiet with a view and a believable reason to be there, like a clifftop walk or a beach at golden hour. Elopements love the drama of the mountains and lakes, with room to wander between locations. Sunset anniversaries suit anywhere the sun sets beautifully, which in summer means the west facing beaches and headlands. And if you can't decide, an experience can take in more than one spot, moving between them as the light changes.
You can see how each experience works on its own page: guided proposals, premium elopements and exclusive summer anniversaries. For more sunset spots, there's a full locations page on Twilight Ceremonies.
Finding Quiet in Popular Places
Some of these places are busy on a summer afternoon, but they change completely as the day draws on. Evenings and early mornings bring softer light and far fewer people, which is one reason so many proposals and sunset anniversaries happen then. Out of season, even the most popular beaches can feel like your own.
If privacy matters to you, mention it early. Choosing the right time of day often matters as much as choosing the place, and it's something I always think about when we plan.
Leave It as You Found It
These places are beautiful because people look after them. Stick to paths, take everything home with you and respect any closures or local guidance. It means the next couple gets to fall in love with the same view. Drone flying has its own rules too, so drone coverage always depends on the location.
One Region, Many Chapters
The lovely thing about North Wales is that one story can travel through all of it. A proposal on an Anglesey clifftop, an elopement by an Eryri lake and an anniversary on a Llandudno beach, all within an hour or so of each other. My post from proposal to ever after follows that journey, and the real love stories page shows where some of those journeys have led. However your story moves around this corner of Wales, the mountains and the sea will still be here for the next chapter.
